Church History:University Bible Church was formed in the early thirties as an outgrowth of a campus ministry instituted by Rev. Milo F. Jamison. He had originally determined to form a Presbyterian congregation on the west side in the proximity of the newly-based UCLA campus in Westwood Village.
Pastor Jamison's background included education at Princeton University and Seminary, and a term as assistant pastor at The Hollywood Presbyterian Church. However, after withdrawal from the denomination, he began a Bible Club ministry with the university students. A congregation began to form and met in the El Encanto Building in the Village. Property was obtained on the present site, and, by faith, construction began, and was completed during the early forties. A flourishing ministry was carried on by Pastor Jamison with the church and the student work.
The church has continued as an independent, non-denominational, conservative, Bible-centered ministry throughout its history. At its heart is a strong emphasis on world and home missions. It is our great joy and privilege to serve as partners with a fine group of missionaries through prayer and financial support. We also share in prayer with other Christ-honoring church and parachurch programs.
In 1953, John Whorrall came to Los Angeles from Chicago, following graduation from Moody Bible Institute, to assume duties as assistant to the pastor and association with various phases of church and publications. After a number of years as assistant and associate pastor, he assumed the pulpit duties and broader leadership in 1968. With Pastor Jamison's gradual retirement from teaching, and his later home going, John Whorrall has served as senior pastor to the present.
Fully convinced that the maintenance of a healthy church demands a team effort, we strive to see men and women discovering their spiritual gifts, and then utilizing them for the glory of Christ, reaching the lost with the Gospel, and edifying the congregation. We have been blessed with a rich representation of all ages, races and professions to form a family that loves God and seeks to serve Him.
In September 2006, after 53 years of service to the church John Whorrall retired and he is now Pastor Emeritus.
